Nantes (pronounced like haunt with an 'n')

so I don't really post during the week because the only "exciting" things happening to me are getting lost on runs in the city when it's about to down pour. luckily i found my way back into the park that i was originally in and ran my short little legs as fast as I could back to the grocery since I was already out and of course I was dripping sweat and the employees are just wondering who the sweaty blonde is. now you see why i don't post often during the week, hm?

on saturday last weekend we visited nantes, a city about 45 minutes away by train from angers. it's a really neat place, with some rich history and fun patisserie shops. another castle too - they really love their castles around here. suitable real estate for myself i'd say.. LOL. it was not however the prettiest day.. the wind was blowing hard, rain sideways, and it was quite cold. when we booked our train tickets earlier in the week, it was in fact supposed to be 55 and sunny. sounds a lot like the midwest, huh? saw some neat sites, peed my pants because we laughed so hard when all of our umbrellas flipped inside out when we suddenly entered a wind tunnel, and had a beer at 11am because our jeans were soaking wet and we had enough already that morning. holly and i found our way to ikea with public transit (BIG win - public transit and i aren't familiar pals yet) and it was Holl's first time so that was great. it was a bit insane because it was a saturday, so Holl would weave in and out of the displays, "i am deviating from the the central route!" and i am behind her laughing my butt off at the proclamation. needless to say, heading back home and taking a warm shower was heavenly. wouldn't mind venturing back when it warms up a bit..

a lot was accomplished this week. took my first exam (it was french. it was pretty tough as to be expected) i also paid my rent in full for the semester, cleaned, mailed a few things etc. your average daily tasks are not quite so easy around here.. they make you jump through a lot of hoops for basic things like renters insurance and banking. this leads into my post office story - i wanted to mail a post card, and i needed to purchase a stamp. don't know the french words for mail or stamp, but the lady was all over it when i showed her the postcard and asked where i wanted to send it to (i know Etats-Unis, french for USA) and so she handed me a stamp. i'm standing there trying to peel off the back of it to stick it on the post card. she looked at me funny while i struggled and then i pseudo-licked the stamp and said, "comme ca?" (like this?) and she said oui and proceeded to crack up. look out world, #eurojules is learning a new thing every day. like stamps aren't automatic stickers everywhere like they are in the US.

for my wine marketing class, we had a double block class period (6 hours. yes, i repeat 6 hours of the SAME class in the SAME day) but thankfully we took a field trip for this one. don't worry, those double blocks of hell are common. it's a horrendous way to schedule classes, but ESSCA could give a rats patootie about whats logical in class scheduling. had a professor bail on class 15 minutes before this week, sent an email like whoops sorry won't be there ( i was definitely already at school) and they reschedule canceled classes here, so that's another chunk of an evening i am sacrificing for a this dang class. #eurojules was less than thrilled if you can imagine.

anyway, the field trip. we ventured out to saumur to the ackerman wine caves, which they don't actually produce wine in anymore, rather it's for showy purposes and events (what a fun job that would be.. planning bashes in wine caves for companies. pick me!) and we learned a lot about the sparkling wine process. it's not called champagne, as it legally cannot be called champagne unless made in CHAMPAGNE, so it is called sparkling wine. one of their sparkling whites is actually a best seller in the US, i believe it's called marquis de la tour if you felt like giving it a try my fellow american peoples.

we had a tasting early on in the day, and our wine making professor stressed the importance of the "tasting" not the "drinking." you're supposed to swish it around in your mouth, and spit it in buckets set upon a pretty granite counter. i was appalled by this idea for a few reasons that i will explain. one, spitting liquid from your mouth in front of a bunch of people is down right disgusting. i don't want to see or hear any part of that - gross. second, it's wasteful! perfectly good wine being spit out to be dumped down the drain. sorry, but i just learned about how long this delicate liquid has to sit around to have "the perfect aromas" and the right kind of bubbles to even make it to the shelves, and you want me to disrespect it by spitting it into a bacteria bowl because it's a tasting? well you can forget it. i hovered in the back of the group and tossed back each glass of the bubbly and thoroughly enjoyed myself. i was on a bus at 9am on a friday morning, i was going to make it totally worth it.

after a long day and a long week, holl and i decided to venture out, order some pizza, snuggle up and watch the LIZZIE MCGUIRE MOVIE because we are almost finished planning our spring break adventures in italy, rome being one of our stops. we laughed our butts off, ate way too many "sweet treats" as holly calls them post pizza and got school girl giddy over the sites in the movie that we will be visiting in a few short weeks. who said two gals in their twenties can't stay in, eat a crazy amount of junk food and sing every word to every song in an '03 disney movie? tonight my friends, it was done in style.

pari(e)s for the weekend

image.jpg

the (e) is so you pronounce it like parie, instead of Paris with the 's' sound. feel me?

it was a fast paced weekend. holly, kerst and I arrived into montparnasse station at 11:15ish on Friday night because Sarah and Mary didn't have Friday classes so they ventured into the city early Friday morning. upon arrival, we were quite hungry. France however closes everything at 9pm or earlier, so we saw the Golden Arches in the distance and walked ourselves to McDonald's. IT WAS SO EXPENSIVE I couldn't believe it. we made it to our apartment for the weekend, an airbnb in the latin quarter. holl and i snuggled up on the tiny pull out couch and giggled out butts off as we watched silly youtube videos because we were so tired we couldn't sleep.

saturday morning we all ventured out, grabbed a fat starbucks latte (FINALLY A COFFEE I DON'T CHOKE DOWN) and a pastry from a cute little shop. we walked to the notre dame first, and it was stunning. when you walk inside and see the grandeur of it, chills run right over you. humbling experience for sure.

after that we walked to the louvre, getting some city sightseeing in. the louvre was really incredible - HUGE is an understatement. its comparable to trying to take on disney in a day.. just can't be done. we saw the egyptian exhibits which i really enjoyed, and ventured into paintings which was wicked cool. some of the paintings were massive and extremely intricate, my favorites we're the religious ones (mostly because i knew the story they were telling, and didn't have to decipher the french description box on the bottom left..) we also saw the mona lisa, which was totally neat but definitely overrated. she is TINY and she's in the same room as some crazy large paintings that are honestly a lot more impressive than a little lady. but regardless, she's a BFD (big freakin deal) and it was neat to see her.

image.jpg

we left the louvre totally hangry, and struggled to find a decent place that we weren't spending $$$$$$$ to eat at. that was tough, as it is paris. we settled on a little restaurant, and about died when we asked for water that we had to pay $8.50 for a bottle that maybe got us 3 or 4 sips each. welp

we continued our venture to l'aduree, which is the famous macaroon place. it was so pretty in there! i bought a rose petal, a chocolate and a coffee macaroon. not a roon girl at all, but they were delightful. we passed by so many odd looking clothing stores that i coudln't pay for even if i won the lotto. funny to me how high end fashion is the weirdest combinations and ensembles, ever.

image.jpg

after that we trekked it all the way back to our "home" in the latin quarter. sarah mary and i stopped at the grocery and picked up some goodies to make dinner. $14 bucks and some change for all 5 of us. i was pretty stoked about that. we made a tasty pasta dinner (with a baguette too of course) and then we sipped on some (a lot) of wine and then we ventured out. the bar we had heard about was asking for a $15 cover.. as if. there were so many guys waiting in line to get in, then they brought us to the front and asked 15 a piece. HA they would be so lucky to have us. so we went to a very weird bar where star wars seemed to be the theme but it was a free cover and ordered a bottle of wine and danced to some seriously american songs (pointer sisters came on, needless to say i got a little excited.) après (after) we were walking the streets of paris, (and felt very safe i might add) and saw the eiffel in the distance. collectively decided it would be so cool to see it at night so we started our walk there. it was REALLY far away so we ubered the rest of the way but i'm impressed with how far we did make it. when we arrived, the tower was having a sparkly light show and it was really incredible. it only lasted about 3 minutes, but it might've been my favorite part of the trip.

image.jpg

sunday we got up (slowly but surely) and went out on a hunt for food. it was a bit warmer sunday, so we ate outside. i had a croque madame, and it was delightful. holl decided to head back to the apartment, so kersten mary sarah and myself walked (quite the distance) to the eiffel to see it in the daytime. we snapped a few pics, then decided to walk up to the first floor. holy smokes it was a ways, my calves were shaking. but it was neat to see the city from that perspective. we walked further to get decent views of the eiffel, and some of the pics turned out pretty fab.

took us over an hour, but we made it back to the apartment, cleaned up, and headed out for the train station (another 30 minute walk.)

all in all, we consumed a few pastries, saw some historic sights, and easily walked over 20 miles in two days. it was a pretty fabulous weekend, with mes amies en paris.

cheers, jkro

first week of school

a few downsides to ESSCA (school):

1. its freezing EVERYWHERE. i think they're used to warmer temps in Angers but it snowed monday so needless to say i've been wearing my parka around to class.

2. les toilettes are rippin hard to find. its like a scavenger hunt to find one, and its hit or miss on whether it'll be open or female. not an intuitive design

3. the whole school smells smoky because all of the students smoke right outside the doors so their clothes smell like it and the smoke just floats inside so it's essentially like they're doing it inside.

update: all of the heat is funneled into one of my classrooms. I was sweating bullets in there.

accidentally sat on a lady on the bus. terrible yes but it's easier to do than you might think.. the bus starts moving and I'm walking to the back of the bus to get out of the way and the driver gunned it and I flew into this lady's lap. je suis désolée (I'm sorry!)

i've decided there are a few things that americans take for granted or don't notice are common luxuries in the states. one being the plastic bags at the grocery, free of charge and you can take as many as you'd like. around here, you have to pay for the bags, or people buy those recyclable sturdy ones because everyone walks or takes public transit so thats how they transport their purchased goods. also, paper towels in the bathroom. i know its not economically friendly, but i love paper towels (i believe i get that from dad. he's big on paper towels too.. @mom @tess know what i'm saying here.) here, it's like a towel roll that you pull down fresh when you use it. the idea seems unsanitary to me though, and i'm missing my tree killing paper towels. another thing are free water/water fountains. I love water fountains and they're everywhere at school, even in public places in the states. around here dehydration seems to be the name of the game. either that or purchasing water bottles wherever you go. big cars are also not a thing.. in the US we have ridiculously large vehicles that guzzle gas like its their job. I saw a car the other day that could easily be mistaken as a barbie car size for kiddos.

we celebrated Hollys 22nd birthday this week on Thursday with a night out to Le Napoli, a pizza place near the chateau. it was probably the best pizza I've ever had, so many delectable toppings and super thin crust. we sang happy birthday at home with a cake that Mary and Sarah picked up from a local boulangerie. it was so tasty and a great way to celebrate the coolest gal I know.

Holly's Corner:

1. sussed. meaning: finished, or ready. "are you sussed to go out?"

2. waste his ass. meaning: beat him in a tennis match (that was the context)

3. swaning. meaning: like frolicking or walking around. "swaning around the house."

well friends, that's all for now. Paris this weekend!

cheers, jkro

welcome weekend

the weekend was fab. Friday night we went to a crêperie and I had two delightful crepes (one savory and one dessert.) holl and I decided to call it a night early and we hung out in her room for a few hours. after I skyped mom and dad for about 2 hours and it was great but my eyelids were closing because it was about 2:30 my time (and i'm finally adjusting.)

saturday morning holly & i slept in and met the girls and the rest of the exchange students at the ice rink. so fun! i was a bit wobbly but we only had one spill out of the five of us (holl fell with flare i admit.) we then kicked around downtown, shopped a bit (i snagged a cute pair of booties for 20 euro. total steal) and then holl and i took monoprix (similar to a kroger.. but much crappier selection and an overall odd setup) on a saturday evening which was either bold or stupid, and i'm definitely leaning toward stupid. stores around here are barely open or altogether closed on sundays so your sunday errands and grocery run are shot when nothing is open.

saturday evening i went for a jog around town, and tried to make it in a square so i didn't have to think too hard about how to get back home. part of the run was a hill and that was rough.. i felt every pastry i've consumed thus far moving my buns up that sucker. i turned a corner and a few fellas were a half block infront of me walking and then i got a whiff of some pizza and decided quickly i had to turn because i was seriously considering swiping a box right out of their hands. when i arrived back home, i had dinner with Bea & Reyes, two of my roommates from spain. we giggled and chatted and had a really lovely time in each other's company. needless to say, i was blessed with incredible roommates that i already love so much. B & R invited some of their friends over, the rest of the clan came to the apartment and we all drank before taking on la Péniche, a club that is on a boat on the river. We hiked it all the way there (in booties.. bold or stupid strikes again for jkro) had a great time and then trekked it back because the tram stops at 2am.

today was really fun - we went to Moulin de Sarré which is a water mill and had a lunch of fouées, which are similar to what i would call a pita but way better, really hot and hollow and we had the option of butter, cheese (YAS BRIE YAS) and nutella. needless to say i was in carb heaven. we drove then to the Bouvet Ladubay sparkling wine cave/cellar in Saumur and toured the caves and learned about the sparkling wine process. We were also able to taste a few - it was a classy afternoon. We were all very sleepy so you best believe my mouth was open on the drive back to Angers..

i also did laundry today and it is so dang expensive in our apartment complex and that grinds my gears quite a bit. i was frustrated the dryer didn't dry everything in a cycle so i had to run it again and of course pay more euros to make that happen. i'm in the laundry room talking to myself, throwing out a few profanities and in walks a fellow greeting me with a chipper "bonsoir!" (good evening) well now he thinks i'm a cussing looney bin talking to my laundry. grand

i also decided i'm going to add in a little lesson each post that i learn from holly. typically words or phrases that i didn't know that she uses often that i totally love. expanding the vocabulary not only to french but to new zealand chatter too.

how great are those? thanks holl, you rock.

finally having all of my belongings is like christmas day every day. beyond grateful for all of mom's help communicating with united while i was tied up without an international calling plan and the time difference. thanks for being so awesome mum.

well, first day of class tomorrow. i'd say i'm excited to get into a routine but my class schedule changes literally every week so routines must not be a favored thing in the eyes of the French. still trying to get a hang of the transit system between the trams and buses. before now, i've never had to ride public transportation. i figured out how to get somewhere new the other day using it and i high fived a stranger in excitement. they were probably thinking, "blonde american weirdo high fiving people at the station." no no sir, you don't understand. i have killer anxiety over getting from point a to point b when its far out of my control. if i make it happen successfully, i am celebrating. celebrate the small wins, amirite?

cheers, jkro
